New Castle County Yard Waste Ban

The New Castle County Yard Waste Ban will take effect on January 24, 2008.

New Castle County Residents will no longer be permitted to have yard waste landfilled with other household garbage. The Cherry Island Landfill WILL accept loads of yard waste for recycling at the normal tipping fee.

Residents may also sign-up for DSWA’s Improved Yard Waste Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) collection program. Residents will purchase stickers for a $1 a bag and place yard waste at the curb for pick-up by DSWA.

    Monday - Friday: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    Saturday: 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Types of Waste Accepted:

  • Municipal solid waste from private collection vehicles
  • Residential solid waste - Small load collection area for residents
  • Construction and demolition debris

  • White Goods - (refrigerators, air conditioners, and other appliances) refrigerant is removed by licensed technicians and scrap metals are recycled
  • Tires - Recycling applications
  • Household Yard Waste - Residents can dispose of grass, leaves, branches and shrubs

User Fees:

  • Private car or station wagon - $4.35
  • Pick-ups, vans, trailers, etc. with waste weighing less than 120lbs. - $4.35
  • Pick-ups, vans, trailers, etc. with waste weighing more than 120lbs. - $61.50/ton pro-rated
  • Packer trucks/other large vehicles - $61.50/ton pro-rated
  • Tires- $160/ton pro-rated

Small Load Collection Area

Cherry Island accepts household waste from residents at the small load collection area. This area is located away from the active landfill, just behind the scale house.

Recycling Drop Off Centers

Center Residents using the Sandtown Landfill are encouraged to use the Drop Off Centers in their communities before disposing of household waste.

To find the nearest Drop Off center, use the search form here on this web site, or call the CITIZENS' RESPONSE LINE at 1-800-404-7080. There is also a center on-site at the landfill for use prior to crossing the scales.

Electronic Goods Recycling Program

The CIL accepts electronic goods from Delaware residents Monday - Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Delaware schools and businesses need to call the CITIZENS' RESPONSE LINE to schedule an appointment to drop-off their electronic devices at the Delaware Recycling Center. This program provides Delawareans with an opportunity to recycle unwanted electronic equipment. For a detailed list of acceptable items click here or call our CITIZENS' RESPONSE LINE
